Newcomer Course (Brush-Up)

Drivers who have had driving experience outside of Canada but are uncertain about driving or road laws in Alberta will benefit from taking Alberta Driver Education and Training Brush Up courses.

Canada has its own specific set of rules for driving and some of these rules vary province to province. There is also the added challenge of Canadian weather which can create some of the most dangerous road conditions on the planet and is well worth preparing for.

Our Brush Up course is available to provide the knowledge to drive safely in Alberta and help prepare students for a class 5 road test. Alberta Driver Education & Training can provide lessons with instructors who speak in English, Cantonese, or Mandarin.

In Alberta, drivers from out of country may drive with an international license. However, if you intend to drive for longer than 90 days or intend to stay in Alberta, you must exchange your license for an Alberta driver's license.

Taking a Class 5 Basic road test may be a necessary requirement in this process. Out of country drivers should contact an Alberta authorized registry agent for additional details.

Course Description

Newcomer Course (Brush-Up) Description

Our brush up course is perfect for those who have experience driving but are new to Canada. Many will use the brush up course to help refresh themselves on Alberta's rules and regulations. This is an important process to keep in mind for those planning to drive in Alberta. Though you may have driving experience you may be used to different rules, in many countries the lanes are opposite of those in Alberta. The difference in weather conditions is another common problem that catches unprepared drivers off guard every year. Experience can you drive but nothing can prepare a driver for local storms and weather conditions. Lastly students use the brush up course not only to refresh themselves in the rules of the road but also for road test preparation. By practicing the driving manoeuvres that they don't normally use during their daily commutes with and instructor, students can better prepare themselves for the Class 5 Basic and Advanced Road Tests.

Most Common brush-up course requests:
  • Parallel parking
  • Uphill/downhill parking
  • Merging
  • Stall parking
  • Lane switching
These areas are tricky and can often be the area in which students are struggling with. During the brush up course we will also be keeping track of what manoeuvres that we feel you need to practice. At the end of the session the driver instructor will discuss these areas that need improvement so that the student can be clear on what they still need to work on.
